N Street Village helps women knit a lifeline to others

Most of the women -- 70 percent -- who come to N Street Village are between 41 and 65, mothers and grandmothers who raised families, then were left without health care, benefits or housing…Inside the center, there are case workers and a medical staff, a computer lab, and job and resume coaches. And there's a spa menu of alternative therapies: art classes, Afro-Brazilian dance, reiki, yoga.

Obama calls for movement on small-business bill
Gelberg Signs is a small business in the District of Columbia that is hiring new workers, the White House said. It is expanding and making new investments in equipment and technology thanks to two Small Business Administration loans. It also has taken advantage of the HIRE Act, signed by Obama in March, which provides employers with a refund on payroll taxes paid on any unemployed worker they hire.

It’s down to the wire for the Progressive Insurance  Automotive X-Prize, or PIAXP, a competition announced in April 2008 as a way to spur the development of clean, high-mileage vehicles. Funded to the tune of $10 million — which will eventually be divided among three separate categories — the event seems unexpectedly well-timed considering the way the BP Gulf oil spill has raised anew questions about America’s dependence on foreign oil.
